I Hate My Game Table!
OK.... I know, ... every time I look at the darn thing I see something I could do better... right now a darker color...or perhaps on the backside of the 4x4 sections I'm thinking a classic green finish with no flock...more "Old School"...and I'm lusting after another foot on the short dimension...making it a 5'x8' instead of 4'x8'...and the "Geo Hex" hills are really starting to show their age...maybe a little work with some MDF and a jigsaw will fix the hills...I should just count my blessings for being able to have a 4x8. But I really love the images I'm seeing of a more "abstract green" table (a la Henry Hyde's demonstration games)....What to do...what to do...
...as our gaming evolves...so does the world it happens on(in)...

Well many of us think that your table looks fine . . . but that's not the point, is it?
If you want to have a plain green table like Stokes' Grand Duchy of Stollen table I can hardly criticize you since I really like the look of it as well.
In fact I'm considering getting some boards cut to fit over my current table and to paint them green on one side and "desert tan" on the other. You might consider the same.
Meanwhile, don't despair too much . . . your current table really looks pretty darn good (even if you hate it).

Thanks guys. Yes, pull the band-aid (plaster) away from the hairy knee and go for the more abstract, old-school look. I wish I'd done it much sooner. Then just lay your houses, trees, hills, and water features on top. Very versatile, and you really do soon forget that things are slightly less model railroad-like, so you can concentrate on your tactics and the appearance of your soldiers, the latter which should be the main focus of any game.
Best Regards,
Stokes
Yes, Stokes' table and terrain (and minis) have a great "old school" look.
Your table looks great to me. I would love to have a 4'x8'table! But I don't really have the space for it. Right now I'm playing on 2 card tables covered with a sheet, total size = approximately 33 3/4 inches by 67 1/2 inches. I hope to increase to 4'x6' soon.
A case of "the grass is always greener"?
Your table looks fine. Getting the right look for your personal taste is always a problem.
I spent some time looking for some fabric to cover by 8ft x 3ft3 table. I wanted the old-school look. I finally found some large remaindered curtains which were just the right shade of green.
Go for what you like
